Adwords:

It’s an advertising program run by Google in which advertisers choose certain keywords to they want their ads to be associated with. Next, those ads will be shown on search engine result pages or the webpages where similar information or words related to those keywords are mentioned. Algorithm:

A mathematical formula that search engines use in order to rank the web pages they find by crawling the web. Search engines keep the details of such formula as very secret information and never share them with anyone. SEO experts work on how they lead search engines to function. This will be known to them as they observe the interaction between a website and search engines after each change is applied to the general settings inside and outside the website.

Alt Tag:

The alt attribute or alt tag  is an HTML element attributed to an image tag. It’s basically the text displayed in the place of the image while the image is loaded. You can also see them when you turned off images at your browser. SEO experts recommend websites to use it as it’s one of the factors that help you with your SEO score although it’s not essentially required. Alt tags should describe the images they are attached to. Such descriptive phrases or sentences usually bear keywords in them as well.

Anchor Text:

It’s the text used in an html link. Some know it as Link Text. Actually, anchor text is the clickable text of a hyperlink.

Anchored Links:

They are the hyperlinks created using anchor tags. If the word, phrase is a keyword, this will enhance the power of that particular keyword in your SEO campaign. Having several anchored links of this type pointing to your website/blog will have a strong impact in increasing your search engine ranking for that keyword.

Backlink:

This term is very often used in SEO-related text or talk. It refers to a link that points to a web page usually from an external site. These types of links are essential in gaining higher search engine rankings. The best practice to gain more backlinks is to obtain them in a natural way, using quality content, and other legitimate methods.

Backward Links:

They are the links from inside your site/blog to other webpages within your site/blog. It’s important to have good number of backward links to enhance the internal linking of your website, specially when you use your keyphrase as an Anchor Text in them.

Bad Neighborhood:

It refers to one or more websites/blogs that make use of spam techniques or take unethical measures for obtaining higher visibility online. If your site/blog is associated with such sites/blogs, chances are you get punished bu search engines. This happens when you link to them. So, always take care while posting a link to another website.

Blind Traffic:

It’s low quality traffic that isn’t targeted traffic bringing certain visitors using your favorite keywords. It’s usually generated by misleading advertising, spam and other types of online marketing methods.

Broken Link:

It refers to a link that doesn’t take the user to the destination page when she clicks on it. When the destination page is renamed, removed or deleted from the site’s server, this is usually the case. Some call it dead link as well.

Browser Emulation:

Search engines don’t like the repeated requests to their databases, specially when it occurs for a long time. They suspect that such requests could originate from some software program, not human searchers. Search engines don’t like the softwares imitating this behavior. The reason is because when humans perform browsing, they visit the search engine’s home page first, perform a search, pause between searches they do, request pages at the URLs provided as search results, etc. Of course, some softwares are built in a way that emulate human-conducted browsers’ activities. This action is called browser emulation.

Call to Action:

It’s an advertisement copy that strongly suggests to take a certain action toward the site/blog owner’s defined action. This action could be several different steps to take. Some examples of call-to-action steps are phrases like: “Click Here”, “Get Your Free Report Now”, “Download a Free Report”, “Send an Inquiry”, “Buy Now”, etc.

Cloaking:

It refers to a method in which two different content is provided for the same webpage. One, which is higly optimized for search engines and another one, which is more appealing for the human readers. This isn’t an ethical method and search engines consider it illegitimate SEO technique.

Content:

By this general word, we mean any type of information located on a webpage like text, image, audio, video, etc by a site/blog’s content creator.

Conversion:

It’s a previously defined reaction of the site reader in response to your call to action. What you define as conversion could have different meanings, like a sale, a subscription, a download, etc. It’s you who decides what the goal of your site or marketing campaign is.

Conversion Rate:

The percentage of the people who take your desired action compared to all those who are exposed to your advertisement, sales page, etc. In other words, the number of the people who take your preferred action divided by all the exposed ones multiplied by 100 will be your conversion rate.

Crawler:

It’s another name for search engine spider. It is a robotic program made by search engines that is sent through the web to visit and download webpages. It will store them so that search engines can check them out later.

Cross Linking:

It’s a method to increase the link popularity of one’s website. Some website owners interlink their websites together increase their ranking. This isn’t considered a good practice by search engines. When such sites are strongly linked together but not linked to the rest of the web, they should expect punishment by search engines.
