7 Link Building Mistakes to Avoid

Posted on 21 September 2009

I’ve categorized link building mistakes into seven most important ones that can help you increase your link popularity.  There are several strategies that SEO experts use to achieve such a goal with various off-page tactics. The mistakes I’m going to introduce here are going to be useful for you no matter what channel of online marketing you’re going to implement. Here are the seven link building mistakes:

1) Don’t Use Keywords as Anchor Text in Your Links.

Some people make use of any words possible for creating a link to their sites. For instance, they hyperlink the work “click here”. They don’t think or care about the key phrases as key elements in increasing their link popularity whereas such application of these words are extremely decisive in their campaigns. I can say that lack of such critical use of keywords could hardly end in gaining targeted website traffic. By the way, who ranks first in Google for “click here”? Isn’t it funny?

2) Conduct Lots of Link Building at One Go.

This is another wrong policy some people deploy. It mostly happens when you pay a so-called SEO service provider in hope of conducting a one-time link boosting service for you. If you’ve not been creating backlinks to your site on a regular basis and perform such a project, there will be no gain for you in search engines. The crawlers are too smart these days to be fooled so easily. Legitimate online businesses build links over time, not at one attempt. It’s not natural.

3) Build Links back to Your Homepage.

Many people create such backlinks to their websites. This could be because of two reasons: a) they have a one-page site, and b) they haven’t thought of other pages as landing pages. As site visitors are known to look for what they want in a very impatient way and time is valuable to them, the best practice is to get them to their desired page as soon as possible. If your product/service/subscription page isn’t your homepage, make links to those pages.

4) Get Links from Bad Neighborhood.

Call it ignorance or greed. Some people get so easily attracted to free or cheap services that post links to your site from free-for-all (FFA) pages , spamming websites, banned sites, etc. Such links are of no value. On the other hand, if you get involved in making a worse link building mistake by posting links, reciprocally or unilaterally, to them, you must wait for search engines’ punishment.

5) Make Use of Only One Method for Link Building.

Some take this wrong method of using only one channel to increase their link popularity. For example, they only perform article marketing. Well, they use a lot of potential if they don’t use press release marketing. Making use of both methods isn’t a good reason to say no to social media marketing. The best practice is to utuilize various legitimate methods to get targeted website traffic from various media as well as search engines.

6) Don’t Link Out.

Some site/blog owners don’t link to other websites as they’re afraid of losing their link power. According to some search engines like Google, it helps a lot if you link out to other sites as well. It indicates that you introduce other sites to provide more information for your readers. So, it’s better to consider linking out to other sites form time to time as well.

7) Don’t Build Links Consistently.

Some people may start a link building project for their sites or their clients’ in a wrong pattern where very different number of links are built for a site each month. They may build 10 links this month and 100 links next month. The third month, they stop building links and restart at the fourth month. This doesn’t help their link building campaign at all, because it loses its natural state. The assumption is that a site gets links if it’s worth it. How can your site be worth getting links this month, but not the other month?

Other Link Building Mistakes

There could be other mistakes some may make in increasing their link popularity. I invite you to introduce any other wrong practices that could lead to negative effects in improving your search engine rankings.

#6 is good to know, but I would still like to find more information about it. From a video I saw about PR from matt Cutts, was that the outlinks do have a measurable effect on link building, but I do understand that you need to link out to be part of the community.

  2. Thank you for great link building tips. Link building process should be well thought. Not all the sites are worth to get links from. Links from bad sites will most likely hurt the website’s reputation. And it’s important to have the keywords in the anchor text when building links and vary the anchor text from link to link. Firstly, this helps rank the website for different keyword phrases and secondly, this will make the links look natural in the “eyes” of search engines. Better if you vary your anchor text in a 60%/30%/10% manner: if 60% of your link titles contain your primary keywords, 30% contain your secondary set of keywords and 10% a third set of keywords.
