How to Help Customers Find You

Posted on 24 August 2009

With ongoing search engine optimization (SEO) efforts, you can help customers find you through particular channels. Your potential customers are online, where you are, but the challenge is how to show them the way to your site. In general, there are two ways to attract customers to your site:

  1. Method 1: You go to them, call them and talk to them
  2. Method 2: Let them find you, call you and talk to you

Method 2 Isn’t Passive. It’s Proactive!

I don’t mean that you should sit and wait for them to arrive and ask for what you’ve got to offer. Passiveness won’t bring any good things in life. On the contrary, I believe that you should take proactive measures to help customers find you without going directly to them. Have you ever faced a situation where you go to people and tell them how great an idea you have and they turn down your offer by saying nothing or, “OK. I think about it”? Isn’t such answer as cold as an iceberg? This is the consequence that lots of times we get via method 1.

In method 2, you trigger a marketing machine that works for your benefit in a way that people search for you, find your product/service/information and send you inquiries to buy from you. The attitude is different here, because they need something, look for it and discover that you’ve got it. So, they’re happy and step forward to say hello, can I have one … ?

Yes, this is how search engine optimization works for you. The process is conducted in three stages:

  1. You discover what phrases they use when they search for your product/service/information (keyword research).
  2. You optimize your website for that keyword (on-page SEO) and a particular page to attract them like a magnet (landing page optimization).
  3. You create relevant content enriched with the same keywords and submit it to the web to build lots of powerful links (off-page SEO).

So, before they start searching for you in search engines like Google, Bing Yahoo, etc, you start the work proactively. They go naturally through the above process without anybody telling them . This is how the majority of the people find what they’re looking for on the web. By paving the way for them, you help customers find you on the web through search engines. There will be no cold answers. They are enthusiastic about what they’ve searched for and found.

On-Page SEO: Website Optimization

It’s the implementation of improving steps in the textual content and source code of your site in a way that make it a search engine friendly website. When you optimize your site this way, it will be like the setup for your SEO services. You’ve got a powerful platform to launch your online marketing campaign. If you ignore the importance of this stage, your consequent steps will not have the same effects you expect.

Off-Page SEO: Website Promotion

Once you’ve setup your site to attract search engine traffic to it, the promotion stage should begin. The goal of this stage is to get search engines work for you by leading searchers toward your landing pages. A major part of such work is done by showing to search engines how popular your site is and how many great links you’ve got from other websites. So, you need to increase the link popularity of your site.

This will be done by content creation and content syndication on a regular and consistent basis. Write articles, press releases, blog posts, etc and submit them to the web in certain numbers during particular period of time. Search engines, on the other hand, will notice that a certain number of links are made every month to your site and certain keywords are used to refer to your landing pages. They realize that as this is being done for successive months, you cannot be a spammer like those who do this once and stop. Then, you get credit for this and obtain high search engine rankings for your keywords and people get to see you.

This is how you help customers find you through search engines in a natural way. Remember, you should do everything in a natural way (organic SEO) and take some time. When the organic results appear in search engine result pages, they stay there for a long time as you continue your website promotion efforts and you go toward domination in your niche.
